Galgo in the spotlight

Piri 7142 - Male - 4 years

The beautiful, sweet, friendly white Piri was rescued from the killing station on the 26th of March 2024 and arrived at the shelter, like all his fellow sufferers, exhausted, orphaned and starving. After almost a year of stay, he was chosen 11 months later and adopted on the 22nd of March 2025. We were all over the moon because Piri is a special little guy, one who gets under your skin and is irresistible.

He is indeed special, because no one before him had  succeeded to be given up after just 5 days because of all sorts of things, it could not go fast enough so we put a rush on it. Reason: he was unfamiliar, lost, he had urinated in the house, had walked into the window, they couldn't sleep at night and needed their "comfortable sleep" etc. So, exit Piri.

Affectionate Mireille

Second Chance Galgo

Caspar 7256 - Male - 4 years

Poor Caspar was rescued from the killing station on the 28th of May 2023 at the age of 3 and arrived exhausted and lost at the shelter where he could start his recovery. After a stay of more than a year, he was adopted to everyone's joy and to everyone's regret was given up after only 6 months because the owner thought he had ADHD and was too active and, and…

He was taken in and evaluated as always at HRC where he regularly plays and sprints with the other galgos staying there, but otherwise he is a very pleasant, sweet, quiet galgo. He may have needed exercise and patience and love more than the prognosis they gave him... In any case, he cannot tell us and is dependent on you who read this and hopefully want to give him a place in your heart and home.

Thank you for reading this.

Affectionately,

Mireille

Second Chance Galgo

Abril 7255 - Female - 7 years

After being rescued from a killing station, the now 7-year-old Abril stayed in the shelter for more than 2 years until she was adopted on the 7th of September 2024 to our great joy. Unfortunately, her happiness and ours were short-lived because after 5 months of adoption she was given up because she barked too much and did not want to come in when called. So far.

So, on 28/2/2025 she was given up, taken in and evaluated at HRC where she has now been staying for 2 months and to everyone's surprise does not bark problematically, has no problems coming in and is still the pleasant sweet lady and good lady we knew. So much for Abril's suffering. If one of you wants to give her a real chance at happiness despite everything she had to deal with, DO IT!!!

Thank you for reading this

Affectionately,

Mireille

Adopt Abril 7255

Dear prospective adopters,

Many people who contact me for a possible adoption ask me if there is more information available about the dog's past.

An understandable question that I can only answer with the fact that many dogs are abandoned by the galgueros in the vast rural areas after the hunting season and if they are lucky, they are found in very poor condition because many die of deprivation. We rescue a large number from various killing stations where they have been tyrannized, starved and often injured and dumped to die. Some are tracked down by volunteers who find them in old buildings, abandoned fincas, dilapidated barns, cellars or sometimes just tied up by their legs without shelter etc.

Exceptions are left with us by galgueros in deplorable condition, among them rejected males, old breeding females that are sometimes still pregnant, animals with broken legs, etc. We should not attach any value to the story that the "owners" tell us. Many are tortured, abused, hanged, have their noses cut off and much worse horrors depending on their performance, I have seen it all. Few of them have a chip because if they do have one, it is cut out before they are left behind. In this way, the identity of the owner is protected. As soon as the dogs are with us, they go into quarantine, blood is taken, examined by the responsible veterinarian and they are given time to recover after which they are sterilized in our clinic by 2 teams of Belgian veterinarians. After that, they are given time to regain their trust in humans, no matter how much time they need for that, a few months, a year... Only when they are in good shape will their photo appear on the adoption page. Hopefully you can understand the fact that we cannot mention any history of these dogs and I do not want to make one up...

In any case, they all have a sad violent past and are still being massively destroyed in all kinds of gruesome ways after the hunting season. About 50,000 per year. With this I can only tell you that despite that terrible past they are beautiful, sweet, gentle and affectionate dogs, real sofa queens, who give us another chance and trust after all the suffering they have had to endure in the hands of humans.

If you are thinking of adopting a galgo, be worthy of their trust.

Kind regards and thank you for your trust in GINB.

President & Founder Greyhounds in Nood Belgium

All greyhounds that are offered for adoption in the photographs below have spent the necessary time in quarantine; their blood is tested, they are vaccinated, castrated or sterilized and have (usually) had their teeth cleaned. They have the chip, their European passport and all necessary documents; as validated below and witnessed by a valid and licensed veterinarian. The dogs are, unless mentioned otherwise, kind, affectionate, gentle and calm animals that can (usually) live together in easy harmony with other dogs and pets. Children are no problem except that they may not scare these gentle and sometimes timid dogs. If the dog has a specific story then you will be told; most of them have been "dumped" or brought to us by the "galguero’s" and since have proved themselves at the shelter. Some are found left behind at vacant houses or are tied up with a metal bow around the leg; left behind to die. Many of them carry the physical spurs of their past, which translates to old scars, but except for that, the dogs are in good health. Others among them have been mutilated. When you wish more information you can always call to the responsible of your region or take up contact with Greyhounds in Nood Belgium. The adoption fee is 350 € for members and adopters who are membre and 380 € for new adopters for whom the membership fee for the first year is included. The registration of your name in Belgium is included in the contribution. Thanks for your visit to our site; we appreciate your trust and support!

Linda 7209
Adopted

Linda 7209

Linda was brought in as a living corpse on the 7th of February 2022, by the galguero who had squeezed her like a lemon, tyrannized her and neglected her all those years and now saw no reason to keep her any longer. He must get rid of her now that he did not need her anymore and dumped her in the shelter where she could regain her strength and where the good, sweet, affectionate lady has been staying for 3 years now due to a lack of interest from candidate adopters.

Like many, she has had a terrible life, but she has used her time in shelter to regain trust in humans, not easy when you know what those dogs have been through. So, I sincerely hope that Linda will get the chance she deserves, one thing is certain, she will never end up in the hands of her tormentor again.

Thus, whoever wants to get to know this sweet, discreet, beautiful, sweet lady quickly, there is no time to lose here...

Robin
Adopted

Robin 7186

After Robin had wandered around the campo for an indefinite period, he came to the shelter where he stayed for 11 months. When he was ready, his photo was put on the site, and he was adopted.

Unfortunately, for a short time, because despite the fact that he was on the travel documents, the adopters decided to wait anyway. So, he came to Belgium where this sweet, calm, beautiful greyhound is currently waiting full of hope for a home.
