Thursday 30th August 2018

After three and a half days “rest”, some “sightseeing”, a bit museum, a bit chatting about our mutual “present and past” and above all a lot of Lionel, we bring Marianne to the airport after a last visit to our problem child, who recovered considerably in the last two days and who developed a preference for croissants. When the usual photo was made she repeats once more that Dirk and his co-driver Roel can drop off Lionel and Marie-Jeanne on Thursday morning. Her friend Philippe is informed that it will be around 4:00 or 5:00h…After a last kiss she enters the airport with her 6 kg heavy luggage full of medical material. We return home to the 16 who are probably waiting impatiently for our return.

Sunday 2nd September 2018

Today, exactly 3 weeks ago Lionel was brought to Casa Belgica.  After more than 2 weeks struggling for his life the tide is turned and since a few days he is eating independently 2 types of chunks and about 8 mini croissants per day. His stitched neck wound is almost healed as well as the hole in his thigh and free of dirt and pus.  Every time when Dirk lets him out we are so happy with the huge amount of pee and the pile of poop that he produces.  Today Dirk has followed Marianne’s “advice” and for the first time he took off the bandage and sprayed the wound with silver spray. I ask Dirk for the umpteenth time if the spray is resistant to flies and after another croissant Dirk takes him outside.  As always our dogs are crowding to watch everything.  While Dirk is walking rounds with Lionel I capture everything on video for the next generation…

Monday 3rd September 2018

Today we end the summer as we started and we drive to Talavera de la Reina with Marie-Jeanne for the last time.  After an examination and X-rays Dr. De Frutos is more than happy with the evolution of our iron lady’s leg and after good-bye we return happy and satisfied to Casa Belgica.  Again one soul that is saved and after recovery at Marianne’s she will be ready for a hopefully better world than the one she left.  She deserves it, she is a fantastic lady, and beautiful too, and in due course the limping will disappear and she will be elegant again. So, when someone is dreaming of a beautiful gray brindled galgo lady…..

Because Vali and Co. will leave on vacation to Rumania tonight we drop off Marie-Jeanne at home and then return quickly for purchases, quickly because Marie-Carmen called yesterday asking if the people who rescued Lionel can visit him, they would like to see him before he leaves to Belgium…We are still on the way back when she calls again asking if we are home already.  Within 10 minutes I reply and I add that we have to unload our purchases first but she hung up already.  She arrives at the same time as we but fortunately she is still on the phone and that gives Dirk the time to unload the car and I can change clothes.  I am only half dressed when the dogs inform us that the visitors have arrived and Dirk asks compellingly where I am, sigh, I am so tired.

When Marie-Carmen arrives accompanied by Louis and the young couple I tell them that Dirk will bring Lionel and ask them to watch from behind the fence in order not to disturb him.  After everything he endured he is physically as well as psychologically still very fragile moreover after his past life as a “chain dog” (what a horrible word) he is learning just now to move in the “open” but he is still carrying his fictive chain and when too much is happening he lies down frightened. When Dirk comes into the garden with Lionel they cannot believe their eyes and both of them and of course me too have tears in our eyes, how could it be otherwise.  They cannot keep their eyes of him and listen with open mouth to the stories about Lionel-L, his agony towards recovery and they laugh their tears away when I tell them that he is fond of croissants and that we bought three boxes for the trip to Belgium.  Before they leave I promise to send photos.

In the evening Lionel-L walks like a “grown up” for the first time without Dirk’s help alone outside!!!  A big leap forward.  My tears are drying…

On Wednesday co-driver Roel will arrive, for Dirk as well as for me the departure fever is rising, also the dogs feel that something is going to happen…
